Trees in the City

City of Ottawa Forestry Services Programs

Contact Forestry Services
  • Trees in Trust
Would you like to have a tree planted on the City-owned property in front of your home?
  • Commemorative Tree Program
The City will assist families or groups who wish to have a tree planted in a City park in remembrance or commemoration of the loss of an individual.
  • Community Partnership Tree Planting Program
The mandate of this program is to improve and enhance the existing forest cover in the City of Ottawa.
  • Green Acres! Ottawa's rural reforestation program
The City of Ottawa is looking for empty, idle fields to be transformed into thriving, green woodlands. The Rural Reforestation Program offers technical and financial assistance to rural landowners for the planning, planting, and maintenance of small woodlands.
  • Trees & Foundation Damage
Although trees are often blamed for damage to building foundations, they may not be the cause of the problem. In Ottawa, shrinkage of Leda clay is a major contributor to such damage.
  • Tree Protection Guidelines
To help protect City trees, the City of Ottawa has in place a Trees By-law. This by-law addresses the protection, maintenance, and control of trees on highways and City property and sets out the responsibilities for persons carrying out work in the vicinity of a City-owned tree.
  • Watering your Tree
A 50-mm diameter tree needs a miniumum of 130 litres of water a week (this is approximately the amount held by six kitchen sinks). See also Water that tree - a real bargain!
  • Alternative Snow Fence Program
The placement of snow fences is an important part of the City's annual winter road maintenance program.
  • Tree Trimming Program
The City owns over 200,000 street trees; an important part of the City's urban forest management plan is tree trimming.
