The Ottawa Forests and Greenspace Advisory Committee proudly announces the next event in the Walk in the Woods Series.
Not Just Another Pretty Landscape
Britannia's Mud Lake Conservation Area
We are pleased to include the Mud Lake area to our Walk in the Woods Series. As guest speaker Dave Moore, an excellent birder, past president of the Ottawa Fields Naturalists Club and resident of the area, will lead the walk through the recreational trails as we explore the fauna, flora and a bit of geology of this wonderful area.
Our walk will take us through different types of habitats. The shoreline of the Ottawa River, a meadow, a marsh, a deciduous woodland, a pond and a coniferous forest. We will cover such topics as the value of a diverse greenspace, and how different habitats help wildlife in an urban environment. We will learn about the different woodlands around the pond and how these affect the plants in the understory.
There is a lot to see! We have recently seen Blanding's turtles and Midland Painted turtles, a Great Blue Heron, a Garter snake, Mallard ducks, frogs, ground hogs, squirrels, chipmunks, and a wide variety of birds.
In addition to its beauty and serenity, our ecosystems provide innumerable benefits upon which species depend. Join us on a walk at Mud Lake as we explore some of these important ecosystems.
